The Wave, hidden near the Arizona and Utah border on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes, dates as far back as the Jurassic period. This beautiful Navajo Sandstone rock formation is famous among hikers and photographers for its colorful curves created by erosion due to runoff and wind.
Access to The Wave is extremely limited, with only twenty lottery-selected permits per day available to the public, and it is often challenging to locate since a rugged, trackless hike must be taken in order to reach it. Los Angeles Times staff writer Hugo Martin once noted, “You can’t call yourself a landscape photographer if you haven’t snapped a photo or two of the Wave.”
